Simple hourly rates
All rates are plus Hawaii General Excise Tax (GET). Most jobs are billed by the hour. For larger jobs or projects, I may offer a flat fee instead. We'll settle on that together once I understand your project needs.
- Free estimates. I can usually give a ballpark estimate once I see your request. If I need to see the job in person, the on-site walkthrough is free, up to 30 minutes.
- Materials. I bring my own tools. If I pick up materials, they're invoiced at cost plus 20%, or you can supply your own.
- Other fees. A shop-supply fee may apply for fasteners, anchors, and small parts. Disposal fees are quoted case by case.
- Deposits. Hourly work needs no deposit. You pay when the job is done. Flat-fee and project work may include a deposit and/or milestone payments, which we'll agree on before work begins.
- Payment. Cash, Zelle, or a check from a local bank. Card payments only in rare cases, by agreement before the job. No PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, or other payment apps.
Kona, from Kūki‘o to Keauhou
That's my normal service area. Not sure if you're in it? Put your address in the request form and I'll let you know.

Outside that area?
I take some jobs farther out, case by case. Extra fees apply: round-trip travel time is billed at my regular hourly rate, plus a per-mile fee.

Common questions
Are you licensed and insured?
I'm fully insured. Hawaii doesn't require a contractor license for small jobs, and I keep my work within those limits.
Are there jobs you don't take?
Yes. I don't do roof work or ladder work more than 16 feet up (insurance limits), major electrical or plumbing, drain clearing, appliance repair, structural or permit-required work, pest removal, or hazardous materials. If you're not sure, ask in your request.
Do you guarantee your work?
Yes. If something isn't right, I'll make it right. At Brett's Traveling Toolbox, I measure success one client at a time.
Do I need to supply tools or clean up first?
No. I bring my own tools. A tidy work area helps, but it isn't required. Just tell me in your request if access is tricky.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
Please give at least 24 hours' notice. Changes with less notice MAY be charged the $200 minimum trip fee.
Do you handle emergencies?
Yes. Emergency response is available 24/7/365 for problems like active leaks or unsafe conditions. Please call. Emergency and after-hours work has additional fees, quoted separately.
